So the last few days have been beautiful, and since it was a 3 days weekend, I decided to finally get my hands dirty in our garden.
Saturday
I started around 10:30am by mowing the back lawn and applying Gardens Alive! Without Weeds (WOW!) all natural pre-emergence and fertilizer. I raked up the grass, trying to get rid of the thatch from being super thick and overwatered for just about forever...
I mowed the front lawn and applied WOW! to it as well. I then turned my attention to the front yard. We laid down cocoa shells about 2 months ago when we ripped out all of the Mexican Heather, so I took the rake and broke it up as it is starting to break down and turn a delicious dark brown. Soon, we'll be ready to replant! I cut back the agapanthuses, not realizing I was mildly allergic to their sap, and proceeded to get it all over my arms. I did a bunch of other stuff...and then I took a shower and bought beer. We had BBQ for dinner. Life is perfect.
Sunday
I played in the dirt ALL DAY! It was awesome. I dug through the side yard, sorting rocks. Really, that was it. Chris cut down a couple photinias and replaced the gaskets on a couple of the sprinkler things. I'm still trying to figure out the sprinkler system. I'll get there sooner or later.
Monday
I played in the dirt again today, but I also raked up all of the organic matter (read: dead weed matter) on the south side and put it near the fence. Chris and I decided to put in vegetable beds, but only do half of them this year, as my original plan was highly ambitious. We will remove the organic matter next year (hopefully by then it will be compost) and
put beds there. So today I staked out the anchor points for the beds and am waiting for Chris to come home so I can get his opinion on them. Next step is that we drill the hole out for the 12" anchors and sink them into the ground. We also have to buy the composite lumber and then attach the other pieces. Then fill with good dirt. I'm still waiting for my seeds....
When I wrote it down, it doesn't seem like much, but I'm tired, sore, thirsty, and quite content with the work I did this weekend. I'm really excited about the south side of the house, and think it is coming together really nicely.
I posted pictures here: http://picasaweb.google.com/gardenpunks/02192007
The captions there tell the story as well.
My to do list still includes:
Low-voltage landscape lighting, back then front
Planting all the stuff I ordered from Michigan Bulb when it arrives (3/5-3/20)
Buffalo grass lawns (another blog soon)
Crocus in buffalo grass front lawn (way cool, again another blog soon)
I will update more soon. I'm brimming with ideas, but the sun is still up!
