In March, I made a post about a compost bin we received as part of a workshop hosted by the City of Folsom. As of today, our first batch is officially ready.
After feeling under the weather for most of the day (not hungover, for the record, but exhausted and allergenic to the max from strong winds in Tahoe this weekend), I felt like a wee bit o'sunshine might do me well this afternoon. And I didn't even break a sweat.
I trimmed a few eggplants to take to work tomorrow (since Chris and I found out we aren't huge fans of eggplant), so I got a little ambitious and simply snipped a few too many times, taking out the plants entirely. I scooped up the redwood bark mulch into the wheelbarrow, and went to check on the compost.
A couple weeks ago, I watered and turned it and noticed a lack of heat coming from it -- a sign that the compost is fully "cooked" so to speak. I added a little organic compost starter and watered it well, wondering if it was truly done or just dried out. When I checked today, it was fully cooked and ready to be used!
I spread it where I took out the eggplants, being mindful not to get any on the emerging seedlings I planted in the last couple weeks.
I think as I plant more seeds through the fall, I will do a little map like Nicole at dig this chick, the links at the side of the blog that show what is planted based on date. Pretty cool.
And that's about all the energy I have. Now I'm going to get a little rest before I have to trek down the hill to school tonight.
