Walking to work, 2011?

My company is located in the same smallish suburb where I live, so I enjoy a short 3 mile drive to work. Ever since I started nearly a year ago, there has been discussion about a proposed new location for our workplace on the other side of the suburb, on the main road that my subdivision is located off of.

Yesterday I asked a coworker who is on some committee for the new building where exactly on that road the building is located. Much to my surprise and wonderment, the building is directly across the main road from my subdivision. Literally, by the way the crow flies, the building will be less than 1000 feet from my front door. I plotted it out yesterday using a Google map, and because I have to cross the main road at a stoplight with a crosswalk, it might actually be 1500 feet to get to the building. Still though…

I jumped up and down like a nerd finding a sharp pencil, and then my coworker ruined it for me. (For the joke to work, realize that the local high school is a block away on the same side of the street as our new building).

“Make sure you don’t wear your backpack to work. You might get attention from the local police for being a truant.”

And then my boss, not privy to yesterday’s joke, made the same joke today.

Anyhoo, I should be riding my bicycle to work now, but that’s not happening for a multitude of reasons. If I’m less than ¼ from my building, I certainly have no excuse NOT to walk.

I can’t wait.

Katie,

We have a good feeling about your job. We hope that it keeps you busy, happy , and profitable well into the years when you don''t look like a high school student. For the record, you do look a little like a high school student at this time.
