Too bad it's supposed to rain. All weekend.
Here are all of the makings of a backyard orchard! (Readers will recognize the purple wall against which I take nearly all of my pictures).
For more info about the planning of our backyard orchard, visit this post.
Left to right:
3-in-1 fruit trees, blueberry bushes (a beatiful green color, I had no iead the foliage was so pretty!), currants, grape vines, pomegranate, box as tall as I am, and ever-so-curious Travis cat.
Wooohoo!

Damn you Californians and your fruit trees! What I wouldn't give to grow my own pomegranate. When can you expect the trees to start bearing fruit?
That looks like so much fun! What a great way to start the weekend!
I am so excited for you! I'll be eagerly awaiting progress photos. We were talking this morning about maybe growing blueberries, so I'm especially interested in their requirements as far as soil, sun, etc.
Awesome! Especially the pomegranate, I grew up in SoCal and used to gorge myself from the tree in my best friend's backyard.
Ah... it's almost like a birth announcement! Congratulations!
Katie, I'm in the same boat. I have figs and raspberries to put in, but it's raining - and supposed to be for another 4 days! Argh. But it's so exciting, isn't it? I am also planting pomegranate from seed this year. I'm excited - they're such beautiful things!
P.S. I'm sure you know this, but I just learned in my Master Gardener class that you should create a little mound/hill for the trees and plant them on that, so our winter rains don't rot their roots.
Orchard in a box - what an idea! I have some apple trees but if past performance is any indicator of future behavior, yours may be the only fruit I'll see in the near future.
If I had clementines growing in my yard...mmmm-mmmm! This is going to be an awesome project--have fun! (Want to send some of that rain to NC?)
meg - Sorry by way of geography. I will never move! I think some of them will bear this year, but the blueberries need 2 years of removing their flowers to get started. Until then, we'll drive up the hill to a U-Pick farm and get what we need.
forge - It was like Christmas...again!
Nan - You can count on the photos. Chris was supposed to post yesterday, but he's a little gunshy about his first post. The blueberries will be an experiment for sure! (We're in USDA zone 8/9)...
Steven - I remember a pomegranate bush in our backyard as a child that was totally wild and we never used it until my non-California-native parents discovered pomegranates, then we stripped the tree every year! I can't wait for our own to start fruiting.
Natalie - birth announcement, that's funny!
Melinda - we had a wonderfully unexpected reprieve yesterday - it turned out to be a gorgeous and warm day! Hope you got your fruit bushes/trees in! We're going to post about the work we ended up getting done yesterday. And thanks for the tip about the mound. We were going to do that anyway, but it was a great reminder.
Jim/aog - I hope you're apple trees bear this year. Are they eating or cider apples?
David - we'll see how long it is before we're able to get clementines...fruit trees are like an investment that comes due after a few years...Not as much rain as we'd thought, but our dammed lakes were dangerously low last summer. Thankful for the rain for sure!
It's actually apples and pears. Two dwarf apple trees, two dwarf pear trees and a columnar apple. Can you tell I have a small space to work with? They're eating apples at best.

I cheated and read your later post so I know that you got out into the garden and planted!
Jim - I'll keep my fingers crossed on the juicy pears!
kate - That's ok. I forgive you for stealing a look at the finished product. It's prettier than boxes and dirt in my entryway!
