As of late, I've had to rely on other people and their nice Flickr photos because I don't have chickens (or ducks). So a shout out to 2-Dog-Farm for this cute duckling, and comical "a pile of chocolate peeps" picture.
Chickens are out. Thanks to Jason and Chris for actually reading between the lines in the code. We can keep chickens, BUT...
My concern with chickens is that where we would house them is against a fence that all of the neighbors that live in the court behind us have to walk by on the way to the communal mailbox. So they'd invariably hear the chickens. And I would bet you dollars to doughnuts we'd have "neighborly" problems really quickly....just on the principle that we were keeping chickens.
Plan B (or D)
I've been reading the Path to Freedom folks' blog, as of late (going back through years of posts has been time-consuming and fun), and Chris got a chickens/ducks book from the library to take on his trip.
Chris: "Maybe instead of chickens, we should look into ducks."
Me: "Ducks would be awesome! And since there's a marsh near here, keeping ducks might not seem so out of the ordinary to our neighbors."
Chris: "In the book, they talked about khaki campbells as excellent egg layers..."
Me: "Someone posted about khaki's recently."
Google Reader search for khakis - Little Homestead in the City
There is a wealth of information about ducks, chickens, and goats (yes goats) on their site. And what they have created on a small urban lot in Pasadena is truly awe inspiring. Seriously, check it out.
So we decided to get two khaki campbell ducks. Now we just need to find some locally...this may take a while.
Pros about khakis:
They lay about an egg a day once they reach laying size
They are generally quiet
All indications are that don't fly
Hawks for the most part leave them alone
They are sociable and amiable with humans
I think we have a winner! Updates as they happen.
