We've finally got a Meyer Lemon Tree!
We had a photinia in the front yard, courtesy the previous owners, trained as a standard (aka. the lollipop bush).
A few weeks ago, it died suddenly. Oh darn.
This morning on the way to the Farmer's Market, we stopped at our local nursery and they WERE TOTALLY OUT OF MEYER LEMON trees. Drats. Perhaps in the fall then.
We went to OSH this afternoon (this is the only hardware store in the area that isn't a Home Depot or Lowe's - remember we don't shop there any more, plus I like OSH more anyway. I can always find what I need easily, and they have a polite and helpful staff), and sitting right out front was this 'Improved Meyer' Lemon. It was in the back of my car faster than you can pucker.
We took out the photinia, and man was it dead. Chris cut the lollipop part off with our alligator loppers, and was able to pull the trunk out of the ground with his bare hands. While yes, he is super strong and totally beefy, the rootball of this photinia was as big as two of his fists. Given it's size and age, we assume it would have been larger.
Anyhow, I now have my Meyer Lemon tree.
And all it took to convince Chris was 3 words.
"Homemade lemon bars."

Congratulations! I'm going to miss ours. : (
So sad, not really possible to have citrus trees in New England states...unless you have a really protected, warm place to shelter them over the winter (and I do not). :/ I will vicariously enjoy yours, ok?
Funny, we have a love/hate relationship with our Photinia, yes common as common is, but they sure are nice privacy hedges when fully grown (we have a few of those, especially in the backyard). Have taken a few out in my time as well, replaced them with clumping bamboo (OK, Katie I know your shocked). : )
Sean
Melinda - I'm sure you'll still have your supply of Meyer Lemons. The universe tends to work itself out in ways we don't understand.
Margo - I'm all about living vicariously through other people's gardens based on what I can and can't plant here! I hear they can overwinter in a nice greenhouse?
Sean - That's funny you mention the love/hate with the photinias. We're the same way. We've taken a couple out, but leave the rest for privacy reasons. But I would like to grow some bamboo as well. Perhaps someday.
I have to echo Margo. I love seeing what goes on in your California garden, but sometimes I'm envious of the plants you can grow there that would never make it here in the northeast. My husband would kill for homemade lemon bars with our very own lemons!
Win? Win, you say? You've sunk to new levels when you can use a man's love for food against him. Chris is weak, but you're manipulative. You should be ashamed of yourself, taking advantage of your own husband. He;s virtually defensless.
But post the homemade lemon bars when you make 'em, ok?
I love my Meyer Lemon tree. I got it for Christmas and it's currently growing a ton of fruit, while growing new leaves, and still blooming flowers. I am going to have a good a amount of lemons.
Also check out the Meyer Lemonade recipe over at Vanilla Garlic. Yum.
mmmm, lemon bars. I wish I had a lemon tree...why don't I? This is citrus heaven...Maybe next year. Sooo many uses for lemons... *daydreams*
