Daily Picture

daylily, originally uploaded by gardenpunk.

A few years ago when I'd just started gardening, I saw a picture in Sunset Magazine that took my breath away - it was a large stand of 'Frankly Scarlet' Daylilies grouped together en masse. The effect was stunning, and I still have the picture.

I immediately went out and found Oake's Daylilies and purchased 3 'Frankly Scarlet' Daylilies, which rewarded me each year with beautiful blooms from May through November. ($48 to spend on plants was a lot of money to me at the time as well.)

We've since moved from that house and those daylilies are about the ONLY thing I miss. I wanted so badly to steal them when we moved.

The previous owners of our current house planted a bunch of 'Stella de Oro' Daylilies and a couple random red daylilies that still make my heart skip a beat when in full bloom. The reds are still setting leaves, but the Stella de Oro's are in full bloom, and have been blooming for a few weeks.

Daylilies don't need much of anything besides a little water. They don't seem to suffer many problems in my neck of the woods either. Low maintenance, beautiful flowering plants are the best.

And daylilies are still my favorite landscape plant.
