Cumulative Harvest Tally

Summer Harvest

We have been weighing everything coming out of our garden (that which we're eating, doesn't go to waste before we can eat it, and with exception to the early salads), since late April, kicking off our summer harvest.

We've tallied the results, and since April we have grown exactly:

33 lbs. of our own produce!

Sadly, I thought it would be more than this. There are a few things I should mention:

*We had some major blossom end rot on the tomatoes and about 1/2 of them were no good. However, the indeterminates are kicking into high gear and we're getting a fairly consistent harvest on an every-other-day basis now.

*Our yellow pattypan squash seems to go crazy if we don't tend to it for a day or so, pumping out HUGE specimens that we don't get around to eating (I've heard they're very seedy anyway). We've thrown a good number of these in the green waste bin. The green ones taste more succulent anyway.

*We have butternut squash and 30+ pumpkins ripening as we speak. There should be no shortage of poundage once these come ripe in a couple months!

July 30th is my self-deemed midway point for the gardening season, and I'll post a little more about our garden, what worked this year, and what I've planned for next year on July 30th. (This post always gets me ridiculously excited.)

I hope all of your gardens are coming alive and providing for you and your families.

What a great idea. Maybe I will weigh my fall harvest. It is too late for the summer stuff.

Every little bit helps. Congrats on the harvest, and the running tally is a fantastic idea. Great Growing and keep up the good work Katie!

That is so great to hear, that you are really enjoying your harvest at the moment. I have courgettes ripening each day and I can't keep up with them either!

well that beats my 18 lbs so far, but I know I have another 10lbs of potatoes still in the ground.

I'll catch you don't worry.

Fantastic -- What a beautiful picture! It's nice to have points in life when we take stock and assess where we are, were, and where we want to be. I like the "midway point" practice.

Well, now I am going to have to go out and find a used scale somewhere. I have no idea how much we have produced but since we have been pulling stuff since march, and that was onions at the time, I am sure it is getting up there.

And to all of those successful squash growers, I salute you. I may get one butternut before the plant says "enough's enough". Ah well, peppers, eggplant and basil it is until the fall planting season.

Last year at this time, our numbers were HIGH. But this year, so sad, so low. I chalk it up to the move, where we didn't plant anything until it was very close to summer time. And that we live in the northwest now, where we really have to learn to plant things early and protect them, in order to get a decent crop. As it is, though, our potatoes, squash and tomatoes are all flowering - so I imagine we will have a huge end-of-summer/beginning-of-fall harvest. Very excited about that!

Wow, looks and sounds amazing! I had blossom end rot on my brandywine (grrr)
I am sad that my green zebra didn't produce more tomatoes, I'll have to grow two of these next year.

That's great! Your tomatoes look beautiful!

Definitely sounds like a hefty, healthy, happy harvest.

We got hit pretty bad with cucumber beetles earlier and so most of our squash, pumpkins and zucchini didn't make.

It's my heirloom tomatoes that sustain me. ;~)

Ugh, we had a tough turn with the blossom end rot as well! We finally got a packet of Messenger and it seems to have really cleared up.

this photo is truly electrifying in vibrancy! Good job weighing in your food! I haven't started yet, although I am doing a daily photo documentation of harvests. I tell myself, next year, I'll start the weigh (I got a small postal scale for the small produce from a yard sale!)

I TOTALLY CAN'T BELIEVE HOW FAR BEHIND I AM WITH COMMENTS!

debbi - Next year, we will break down harvest weights by crop too.

bestdank - Thanks for the kind words about our harvests!

matron - Thankfully we like our squash, so we're not sick of its production...yet.

spelled with a k - you certainly have more potatoes than we did. I think we will use the "garbage can method" to grow them next year.

ceecee - Thanks! Hope your harvests are going well too.

ann - The midway point thing is funny because I started thinking back about this year and realized I did it the same time last year! I made a tradition of it now...

Eric - We have a digital scale, but I wish we had one like you see in the grocery stores. Sorry to hear the BNSQ is not doing to well. Keep your fingers crossed for ours.

Melinda - I bet Seattle has a nice long fall season, right? Next year I'm sure you'll be in your element after being able to start things at the right time!

NotSoCrafty - Our Brandywine sucked, we had to take it out, but I'm wondering how long the green zebra will produce. I feel an experiment coming on...

rayrena - Thanks! Hope your tomatoes are doing well too!

tc - Sorry to hear about your massive losses, but yes, tomatoes seem to make up for most other indiscretions in the garden, don't they?!

mrsb - I will have to look up to see what Messenger is.

ajk - You should start weighing now, you have a scale! What are you waiting for?

Miriam - The color of the picture is totally saturated, as is the taste of all of our organically grown veggies!

Katie - I know im so late seeing this but it might be the prettiest tomato photo I've ever seen!
