Another HFCS warning

corn

I was reading over all of your blogs tonight and came across this post over at Kicking and Screaming.

I usually try to avoid high fructose corn syrup, but break my rule for an occasional soda or other snack.

HFCS can contain Mercury.

READ THAT AGAIN.

HFCS can contain Mercury.

Mercury. Wow.

Being a human being, and more specifically, a woman of childbearing years, this is a toxic nightmare. You can bet your bottom dollar I'd rather go hungry than consume anything with HFCS in it, EVER AGAIN.

Way to go, FDA. You've once again illustrated why you do NOT have American's best interests in mind.

Having recently read Michael Pollan's In Defense of Food, this doesn't surprise me particularly. Now, what's amusing and annoying is that I was just reading something about HFCS with a positive spin on it, but I can't for the life of me remember what or where--obviously I need more coffee this morning. Just another reason to avoid processed food as much as possible.

I suspect the reason the FDA hasn't done anything about this is that the levels the IATP study found are below the established acceptable limits for mercury (at least for drinking water, which is 2 parts per billion, set by the EPA, and for seafood, which is 1 part per million, set by the FDA).

To me this is just a sign of a wider systematic collapse - beyond just economic, but a result of years of neglect, greed and pandering. FDA is rife with politicized bureaucrats serving their own interest and neglecting the impact of the inaction on our health. Its time to wake up and get mad, its the only way things will change.

Ugh. I generally avoid HFCS anyway, but this just gives me another reason to cut it out entirely.

jodi - Good book, glad you read IDF. I hope you're feeling better!

seeded - You make an excellent point, thanks for the sanity check. For giggles, I pulled up the water quality report for my locale and mercury wasn't even listed as a contaminant! While the FDA says mercury under a certain amount is safe, I'd rather err on the side of caution, and health!

Sean - He lives! Yes, I agree. The FDA has no interest in safety and health of food, or anything else for that matter.

inoakpark - Like you, I tend to avoid products with HFCS, but every so often enjoyed a soda or candy item with it. NEVER AGAIN!

Part of the problem is that lil' Georgie put industry people in charge of watching the industry. The labour safety board got a coal industry executive put in charge and relaxed safety standards, the FDA got a food industry exec in charge and more industry people placed through the organization and relaxed safety standards. You think it's accidental that this didn't get publicised until after GWB left office?

It also increases your triglycerides, so not a good thing for your health anyways.
