Like many people, we participated in Earth Hour this evening.
We played Scrabble, and apparently I haven't been keeping score accurately all these years. Whoops!
Like last year, we lit a candle and placed it on the front windowsill to advertise our participation. Two candles this year to represent the second year of Earth Hour in our home.
What did you do for Earth Hour?

Oh geez, I was reading blogs, totally forgot. :( I hope my daily efforts make up for skipping this symbolic lights-out moment, although I think it's a good idea to raise awareness. Our electric bill is consistently about $35 per month for a three-person family and I'm home a lot of the time. Not saying we can't do better, but we're doing our best to keep lights off and heat down. You're young, you can still read and play games by candlelight! My eyes are too creaky. Sounds like it was fun.
My boyfriend and I had planned to go out at the time. I asked him to shut off the hall light and porch light that he normally leaves on when we depart the house in the evening. He agreed to it because he knew it was important. We spent a lovely night out with friends and saved the world from an extra 2 lighbulbs worth of electricity for 3 hours.
It was easy and I felt good about.
I think I'll borrow your candle idea for next year. It's a great symbol.
I think it's funny that you learned something new about Scrabble scoring. I wonder what we'd all come away with if we took an hour of our days to devote to a family gathering...food for thought.
We lit a couple candles, built a warm fire, and then turned off everything but the fridge, and the DVR. We cozied up on a blanket in front of the fire until about 10:00. It was quiet and romantic, and would be nice to do more often!
Then I turned the Flyers game back on to see what I missed...
:)
Well, the first 15 minutes consisted of me turning the lights off after Mark and getting situated (I was going to allow him one room since he didn't want to participate... but then he decided to and annoyed me the whole time). Then I read one page by candlelight and then he bugged me to play cards. So, we played one round of poker and one of Rummy. By that time the hour was over and we went to a movie...
I slept. Went to bed VERY early. Felt good, too.
We rarely have more than 2 lights on, and since we put in the gas inserts, we use 1/3 the gas we used to. I feel doing one's best all year around is ample. But your candles are a lovely idea!
I have to get back to scrabble.
I was reading about it 2 days before the event, thinking, 'I want to do this!' Then, the day of, I completely forgot... Such a dork!
I completely forgot about earth hour, but sort of live it everyday... I'm dropping by to introduce myself and to say hi and that I'm looking forward to meeting you at Spring Fling!
I forgot this year too! How sad since last year I was at a party and I made everyone turn the lights off and light candles. This yr we were watching a movie so at least I had no lights on - just the TV.
I completely forgot this year. Totally. Last year though we turned off all the lights, lit candles, and played cards. Our neighborhood is so well-lit that would could easily see to move around the house from the streetlights and the excessive number of security lights (some of our neighbors have four or five!).
