Yield - the act of yielding or producing. What Katie's garden is not doing in 2009.
Although the raised bed garden is much more lush than just last month
August
July
Pretty, yes. Productive, not so much. Unless you count the okra. But even then we never have enough to can all at the same time. The area with the chard has since been pulled out and winter garden planted...and then dug up by maurading raccoons. We'll see if/where stuff comes up and move it accordingly.
My tomatoes suck this year. But damn, they still are delicious.
PS - Potatoes are weeds. We planted a crop 2 years ago, and they still come up and produce tiny little potatoes. Consider yourself warned if you don't pull them all up!
We grow 3 colors of Agapanthus here - white, lavender, and this: electric blue. This shot is straight out of the camera with no editing. The color is as captured!
I WILL be dividing this one come fall. Along with the others. I will make certain to dispurse this one throughout the landscape. So pretty.

Very lush indeed! As for the racoons, I'm still trying to figure them out myself....
Put... Down.... The.... AGAPANTHUS!!!!
Did you not know those things are EVIL?! I will send you an email (or somehow) get you a picture of our ENTIRE "landscaped" yard full of these HORRID WEEDS!
These things multiply, spread, take over anything else and when you dig them up- if you leave ANY piece of that tuber behind... it will grow back again!!! AHHH!!
You Cannot starve them, underwater, overwater, poison or otherwise kill them. If you cut all the green bits off- it will regrow itself BIGGER in a matter of days (or so it seems)! We have had to attack ours (attempting stealth) with a pick-ax.
BTW- EVERY part of this plant is poisonous. On a previous post you said you were allergic to the sap- Nope, the sap is caustic and causes irritation and rash. Don't let your pup chew on any part of it- toxic!
Okay, done with rant. They are beautiful when in bloom (We have an entire yard full of the electric blue, with a dark purple one in front), and they attract the hummingbirds like crazy around here. But they must die. Agapanthus is the main thing I am trying to reclaim my yard from!
Oh yeah- email forthcoming! :)
I love Agapanthus and yet can not grow them in my yard. I have tried growing them every year for the last 5 years and they always die. I am shocked by the previous comment. They are a flower I remember from my grandmother yard, such good child hood memories.
Jamie- haha... I hate them more than anyone can ever know! Like I said, I do appreciate the flowers, but those don't last that long compared to the overbearing everything-else about the plant. My hatred stems from hours upon hours of very hard labor trying to eradicate them from my yard. I suggest planting them in pots.
I don't know where you live, but they love to be dry. When ours get overwatered they turn yellow and look sad (although it will not kill them- drats!). Otherwise, they are well known as "freeway" plants here in California, because often grow alongside the freeways and they take no real care in order to thrive- kinda like a weed. Good luck though! I wish no harm to the agapanthus in anyone else's yard!
p.s. if you want some VERY hardy, healthy, un-killable agapanthus.... let me know next time you are in San Jose. I will load your car with them and I can almost guarantee they will live forever. ;)
I had a garden full of NON yielding plants this year. I keep trying to give up gardening, but it seems to be my own personal drug. I'm addicted.
Your potatoes remind me of my Meyer lemon tree. I took it out because the lemons tasted awful. The danged roots keep sending up shoots.
Beautiful flowers!
Your garden does look very lush. My tomato plants are ugly this year, too, but they are giving me plenty of tomatoes, so I'm accepting them as they are!
I do love the color of that agapanthus. They aren't hardy here, so I'll admire yours from afar and not worry about if they are evil or not...
Carol, May Dreams Gardens
Town Mouse - I heard someone say recently that those raccoons are trying to feed their families, just like us. I can live with them and other creatures getting some of what we plant.
NorCalRN - Yes, they're weeds, used far too much in Northern California. Not to mention they aren't native (So. Africa). We will be pulling the ones out front out, and dividing the ones out back. Got your email and holy cow that's a lot of Agapanthus! My heart goes out to you.
Jamie - Sacramento tends to get a little less rain than Folsom. Maybe that's why? I'd be happy to share my Ag plants with you when I divide them, but like NorCalRN said, keep 'em away from the puppehs.
CeeCee - I saw your post about the nematodes. What an absolute bummer. Can you container garden some flowers at the very least? I feel for you. :(
Carol - Yep, everything looks great so it takes the sting off of the lack of production. Everything just seems to be off this year. I wish we had gotten just a smidge of the rain that you did! I was a cool summer though for the most part here, so no complaints.
Howdy!
I've been thinking about your garden and think I know why it's not producing. Shoot me an email and I will detail!
Next year - lush AND producing! I'll help!
Take care,
Shawna
