Today is the darkest day of the year here in the Northern Hemisphere; it's always darkest before dawn. After today, the days grow longer and spring isn't that far off.
Life, death, rebirth.

Great day to reflect! Thanks for the reminder :)
Shortest day in Sacramento: 9 hours, 28 minutes, 14 seconds
Longest day in Sacramento: 14 hours, 51 minutes, 50 seconds.
Thanks for asking.
Yup, starting tomorrow we'll be headed downhill to springtime. :)
Hoping your days bring enough light to keep you bright all year.
Take care there! This is the time of the year where we must realize that after the light there is dark and after the dark there is light.
This is a speacial day. Those of us with a connection to the outside world revel in it. Yes, it's time to create the world we want, and it begins today.
Cheers!
That's the best way to look at it, Katie. Days are getting longer, starting now. You can take comfort that your winters are far more tolerable and benevolent than ours. Happy Christmas to you--I will be thinking about you, because holidays can be challenging when there have been major personal changes. Hang in there! xxx jodi
Winter Solstice....one of the best days of the year....but that's coming from the "weird" relatives of course!!
And then there is the help the keepers of the time clocks do for us, setting the clocks ahead in the spring to make the days "seem" even longer.
I always look forward to spring, but sometimes - dare I say it? - winter doesn't seem to last long enough. I really love the rest time from the garden, and I always make so many plans for our "down time".
A little late on the replies. But on this first day of the new year, I am replying to each comment individually to thank you for your support and for being a part of my life.
Loganenator - Symbolism abounds in my life, all the time. Happy New Year to you both. New adventures for us all in 2010.
Fred - When you put it like that, the shortest days don't seem so short. Happy New Year. Your friendship means the world to me. I'm glad we crossed paths in 2009.
CeeCee - It is only in the winter that we begin to appreciate the days of spring.
Natalie VV - My days are getting brighter all the time, comments like this help. :D
baby cribs - It's always darkest before dawn. Always.
Trey - People connected to nature think differently. Days like the solstice have a special place as symbols in our life. Happy New Year to you and Monica. Best wishes for your endeavors in 2010.
Jodi - I walked out of my apartment this morning and it felt warm. It was a balmy 50 degrees outside! Loved it. The holidays have been rough at times because drastic change is hard on anyone - but they've been a great time to reflect, feel, and know with certainty that my life is better and getting better all the time. Your comments mean so much to me. Thanks for taking the time to stop by and leave me little nuggets of your wisdom.
KathyK - *I* never thought you were the weird relatives. But "married-ins" face...um...unique challenges. Hugs to you all. Happy New Year!
Rick - Boo DST! Or wait. Boo DST?
Ralph - Yes sir, new balcony garden. Plants are adaptable creatures, just like us. They seem to be thriving.
Kim & Victoria - I always enjoyed sitting by the fireplace drawing gardening plans for the coming spring as the winter rain fell outside. Life is different now, but GOOD different. I'm looking forward to new opportunities for gardening (since I obviously don't have any dirt of my own) and reconnecting with friends and their gardens.
Here's to new beginnings <3 we're cheering you on and so glad to see the blog!
